Time to Fly!

Image
Jetting Off! It's that time of year where we start to fantasise about being on holiday, somewhere away from this endless freezing wind and rain. Unfortunately, the recent spate of plane crashes may be putting some more nervous travellers off getting airborne. I thought you might be reassured by a recent article on the BBC website that shows how, over the past 18 years, the number of air accidents has dropped considerably. "Despite the recent spate of incidents, air travel remains by far the safest form of travel. "Of all transport-related deaths in 2022 in the US, over 95% occurred on the road, according to the latest available figures from the US Department of Transportation. Fewer than 1% were related to air travel." I hope that helps! But if fear of flying is still putting you off booking that dream holiday, do get in touch. I have helped people overcome their fears using a range of different techniques that they are able to go on and use themselves, before or d...

Farewell, January (almost)

Image
We're almost the end of January. Let us all pat ourselves on the back for getting through it!  I vote that January should be designated the Month of Self-Compassion,  rather than one where we're meant to somehow suddenly and miraculously, transform ourselves. Self-compassion - we cut ourselves some slack, quit self-blaming, stop being our own worst critic and simply accept ourselves, faults and all.  There has been a lot of research that shows the enormous benefits of compassion. Here are just some of the findings: Reduction in anxiety, depression and stress; increased pain threshold Higher levels of emotional intelligence Nurtures non-negative thinking Greater social connectedness and depth of relationships with others - recognition of a shared humanity An increase in oxytocin and endorphins levels, which reduce the alarm systems in our brain Decreased heart-rate and blood pressure Amazing! So let's work to quiet our inner-critic. Imagine introducing your Compassio...

Life after Lockdown

Image
The days of lockdown may be behind us, but for some, its legacy lives on Lockdown. I’m sure we all remember the time of daily broadcasts from our senior politicians and scientists; the message was clear and simple: stay at home to stay safe. Just seeing that all-too-familiar logo brings it all back and makes my heart sink. This press release from January 2021 warns us that “Around one in three people with COVID-19 don’t have any symptoms and can pass it on without realising, which is why it’s essential everyone stays at home...” The message is clear – the outside world is full of hidden danger; don’t go out!  I remember how strange and how thrilling it was when the last lockdown was lifted after what seemed like the longest ever winter. People were wearing masks and we had to keep our distance from each other – it felt strange to be amongst people, and equally strange to be detached from them; life, it seemed, would never be quite the same again. Jump to the present day – alt...
